Sandouping,
38km upstream from the Gezhouba Dam, Yichang
Designed 2 miles long and 607 feet high, the Three Gorges Project
(or Three Gorges Dam) will hold 36 billion cubic yards of water. A
big lake will appear in the Three Gorges,
covering 418 square miles and stretches for 373 miles, With $30 billion
US Dollars investment, and annual output of electricity 84.7 kilowatt
hours. |

| Currently
under construction at Sandouping, the Three Gorges Project is the
largest hydro-electric project in the world at present scale which
is now attracting world-wide attention. The arguments on this project
never cease. Possessing comprehensive utilization benefits mainly
for flood control, power generation and navigation improvement. It
will be a vital important and backbone project in harnessing and developing
of the Yangtze River. The whole project will be completed in the year
of 2007 as planned. |

| Most
cruise ships will stop here for a one-hour shore excursion. Visitors
will be taken with the brand new spacious coaches imported from Germany
to cross the bridge and see the model of the Three Gorges Project,
where local technicians give a briefing about the project. Then going
to the Jar Ridge, a man-made hilltop overlooking the whole construction
site. On the way back, the working site and living quarters are also
included in the routing. |
